Showcase Features: Planted in the spring of 2022, this compact garden of just under 1,000 square feet highlights the beauty and resilience of locally native, low-water-use plants. Divided by a gently curving walkway, the smaller section features mounding species like 'Canyon Gray' sagebrush, 'Warriner Lytle' buckwheat, and 'Calistoga' California fuchsia, creating an inviting mix of textures and colors. The larger side incorporates the same plants, allowing for a more open layout with an impressive woolly blue curls as a focal point. Seasonal interest is a hallmark, with 'Valley Violet' ceanothus and manzanitas blooming in early spring, buckwheats in summer, and California fuchsia providing vivid fall color.

Other Garden Attractions: Unique design elements include small level changes and a whimsical "river of sticks," which adds a naturalistic touch and complements the overall landscape. A few boulders offer basking spots for lizards, enhancing the garden's appeal to local wildlife. The parking strip extends the design with low-growing 'Valley Violet' ceanothus, 'Nicolas' chamise, and coyote mint.

Gardening for Wildlife: Designed with wildlife in mind, the garden attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and various bird species. Wildflowers and insect-friendly plants provide habitat and sustenance for pollinators throughout the year. Maintenance practices like hand weeding, efficient drip irrigation, and mulching with natural materials help conserve resources while supporting soil health and insect life. By tolerating some plant damage, the gardener fosters a thriving ecosystem that balances beauty and biodiversity, demonstrating how even a beginner gardener can create a habitat that harmonizes with nature.
