Growing Natives Garden Tour 2013

Sunnyslope Habitat Garden (4 photos)

Garden #3, Belmont

Showcase Features: This attractive front garden was designed with wildlife in mind. At the same time, the tidy arrangement of the plants is sure to impress all the humans who visit as well. Different salvias and low-growing ceanothus and manzanita form an attractive basis with different shades of green and grey. The purple flowers of the sage harmonize with the purple coyote mint. Grasses round out the picture and provide visual interest. The sages and Verbena Lilacina 'de la Mina' enchant those who walk by with their fragrance year round.

Other Garden Attractions: Because deer can be a problem in that part of the town, younger plants are protected by cages.

Gardening for Wildlife: Skippers, butterflies, bees and other pollinators enjoy the flowers while wrens, California towhee, and chickadee like the shelter of the shrubs and visit a saucer with water to drink and bathe. The saucer is placed in an open area so cats cannot hide and surprise the birds.
